Build a system prompt in three layers: role, style, guardrails. Keep it under 200 words so the model follows all of it. Test by sending an off-scope request — if it doesn’t refuse cleanly, tighten the scope line. Save your best templates as named presets; the ones you reuse weekly are worth the minute it takes to document them. A system prompt is not a one-time setting — it is the operating manual for every conversation that follows.
